Impulse is a clean sheet concept. A one off idea for a single purpose, to win races. Its not a cross country cruiser or aerobatic mount, heck it probably won't even be that comfortable to fly. What it will be though, is singularly focused on the task at hand.
Airplane design in general and Air Racing in particular is all about compromises. Light weight is paramount. Less weight equals faster acceleration at the start, and less lift the wing has to make for a given G around the course. The aspect ratio and planform have been optimized for the Reno course. A blend of more than 5 custom tailored airfoils are utilized for optimum lift. Special attention has been paid to making all the pressures play nice with each other, inside and out. Suffice it to say that every inch of the plane is the shape it is for a reason. It has every trick I know how to do. Will it work? I dunno, hang around long enough and we will both find out!
It is all hollow molded composite, built from female tools. Why am I going through all the trouble to make nice quality tools? Well, its the way I've always done things in my modeling life, so I'm comfortable with it. it makes for really nice light weight parts too. I doubt I'll ever build a second one, but if I did I'd rather spend the time to make nice tools and have the option of a whole lot less effort the second time around I guess. The Impulse IF1 Facebook page is where I am chronicling the build, so you can head over there to see more.
